Deadliest Recent Attack Shakes Iraq |
Escrito por Fany Rodríguez
Baghdad,
Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) Iraqis woke up on Monday plunged into
a profound concussion, when the residents of Baghdad are
preparing to bury the 132 people that died, due to two
powerful attacks, which also left more than 500 others
wounded.
The attacks, which have been called the deadliest in recent
years, were perpetrated on Sunday, with the explosion of two
car bombs that crashed against the Justice Ministry and the
capitalâÖs provincial government buildings, close to the
fortified Green Zone.
Police sources said all victims were civilians working in
those buildings or passers-by in Al-Salehiya region, in
central Baghdad.
The figures increased progressively from an initial number
of 74 dead and 265 wounded people, proportionally to the
progress in the rescue teams' work, removing the rubble and
taking out the bodies from the buildings that were totally
destroyed by the bombs.
Iraqi Health Minister Saleh Al-Hasnawi said that the large
number of those wounded forced them to take them either to
the hospitals in central Bgahdad, Al-Kindi, Al-Yarmuk or Ibn
Al-Nafis, to facilitate emergency assistance.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki visited the attack
scene and attributed them to sectors that are trying to
destabilize the political process in the country and hinder
the parliamentary elections scheduled for January, 2010. |
